The Devil's Gambit: Death by a Thousand Distractions
I’ll be completely honest with you. Sometimes I get so caught up in the logistics of running a church and managing a household that I look up and realize my own tank is completely empty.
You and I both know how this works. We aren’t blowing up our lives with massive moral failures. We are just tired. Between working full-time, paying the bills, and mindlessly scrolling our phones to decompress, it is incredibly easy to feel like you just don’t have time for God right now.
The Slow Fade
Jesus actually warned us about this exact trap. He described a scenario where the seed of God’s Word takes root in someone’s life, but then the “cares of the world” and the demands of everyday life rise up like thorns and choke it out.
Here’s the reality for so many of us in Van Buren and across Carter County. The most common way the enemy neutralizes a believer isn’t through overt, explosive attacks. It’s through the slow fade of everyday busyness. He doesn’t need to ruin your marriage or bankrupt your business to stop you from producing spiritual fruit. He just needs to keep you exhausted.
If he can keep you stressed over the news, chasing the next paycheck, and numbing out on a screen, your faith simply suffocates in the dirt of your schedule. But God loves you, and He has so much more for you than just surviving the week.
Cut the Thorns
Mission This Week: I want you to intentionally cut back the noise. Pick one specific distraction this week, whether it is thirty minutes of social media, the talk radio in your truck, or checking your email after hours, and eliminate it. Replace that exact time with the Word. It takes real obedience in the fog to step away from the busyness and trust God with your time. If the slow fade has affected your marriage, our Marriage resources will help you reconnect. And if you’re stretched thin caring for aging parents, our Aging Parents resources offer biblical guidance for the journey.
See you Sunday,
Pastor Jeremy
