Prophecy... Without the 800-Number
I’ll never forget the first time someone tried to give me a “word from the Lord.”
I was young, new to this whole thing, and had no idea what to do with my hands. This person walks up to me with total confidence and tells me God showed them I was going to be a great leader of thousands. Sounded impressive. Problem was, at the time, I could barely lead myself to breakfast on time. I’d been kicked out of three colleges and two internships. If God was telling them I was going to lead thousands, He was leaving out some pretty important context.
But here’s the thing. That moment could have gone one of two ways. I could have let the weirdness of it completely turn me off to the whole concept of prophecy. Or I could learn to separate the genuine gift from the awkward packaging.
A Download From God
Let me demystify this completely. Prophecy is just a download from God. It’s a moment where the Creator of the universe uses a normal person to bring a specific word of encouragement to someone else. That’s it. No crystal ball. No 800-number. No vague predictions about your love life.
The Apostle Paul gives us the job description in 1 Corinthians 14:3: “the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.” Notice what it doesn’t say. It doesn’t say “for their direction” or “for their next career move.” It’s encouragement. Period.
I’ve seen this happen in our church in a way that still gives me chills. Someone walks in carrying a weight nobody knows about, and a complete stranger walks up and speaks a word that hits them right in the chest. Not because the stranger is psychic, but because God sees His kids and He uses available hardware to reach them.
The Guardrails
Here’s the rule that keeps this gift from going off the rails. If someone comes to you with a “word,” it should never be highly directional. God isn’t going to use a random person at a church service to tell you who to marry, what job to take, or where to move. He gave you a brain and the Holy Spirit for that. What He will do is use someone to confirm what He’s already whispering to your heart.
If the word brings confusion, control, or pressure, you have every right to walk away. But if it brings a lift, if it makes you feel seen and reminds you that the God of the universe knows your name, don’t let the weird experiences of the past rob you of a real encounter. When prophecy confirms what God is already saying, it anchors you in the unshakeable truth of Scripture.
Mission This Week: Stop stressing about getting a supernatural sign. This week, just ask God for a simple download. Then keep your mouth shut long enough to listen. And be open to the fact that He might use a friend, a coworker, or even the quiet guy at Bible study to bring a word that hits exactly where you need it, giving you the courage to take one step into the fog.
See you Sunday,
